Italy | Perugia
The goal of this summer study abroad program in Italy is to offer LVC students the opportunity to engage with the culture, language, and lifestyle of Italy in the small, historic city of Perugia.
Perugia is a vibrant city full of old-world charm and cobblestone streets in its beautiful historic center. The center is known for its picturesque outdoor cafés along the pedestrian thoroughfare Corso Vannucci and the beautiful Fontana Maggiore in Piazza 4 Novembre.
Students will take classes with other American students who are participating in the Umbra Institute’s regular summer study abroad program. Perugia is a day trip away from Rome, and Italy is bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, so independent travel on the weekends can take you to exciting new European countries.
Program Details
Program cost for Summer 2027 is being finalized and will include:
- Tuition (6 credits)
- Housing in shared apartments
- Excursions and cultural activities
- Foreign emergency medical insurance
Meals, airfare/travel, and personal expenses are not included in the program cost.
Study abroad grant funding is available based on eligibility. In addition, this program may be eligible for limited financial aid. Please read the 2026–27 Summer Financial Aid Application instructions on the Financial Aid website for additional information and submit an application to the Financial Aid Office.
Summer Study in Perugia 2027 dates are May 14–June 19, 2027.
Application Deadline: February 1
- Applications must be accompanied by a deposit payment of $200 (non-refundable after February 1).
- Remaining balance is due March 15
Students will earn a total of six credits and fulfill one Immersive Experience (IME) requirement through a mandatory course instructed by an LVC faculty director, and an elective course taught by the host institute.
A Comparative Study in Education
Instructor: Dr. Bettie Betram
Students will visit 4 to 5 different public-school settings as they develop an awareness of cultural, environmental, economic, educational, and religious differences between IT and the US. The approach of the course is one of immersion, comparison, appreciation, personal growth, and reflection.
ELECTIVE COURSE (3 credits): Students will select one course from the summer course offerings at The Umbra Institute including Italian language, art history, food and culture, archeology, and literature course offerings. Prerequisites:
Students from any major who are in good social and academic standing with a minimum of a 2.75 GPA may apply.
